June 24, 2025

Summary

Day of AI is proud to announce that one of the organization’s leading international hubs, Day of AI Australia, has been selected as a $1 million USD ($1.5 million AUD) grant recipient via the 2025 “Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI Open Call” program, a global effort supporting non-profit organizations using generative AI to drive social impact at scale.

Accelerating AI Education in Australia

As a grantee, Day of AI Australia along with partner institution University of New South Wales (UNSW) will receive a share of the $30 million USD total prize, in addition to receiving expert technical training and pro bono support from Google AI specialists.

These resources will help expand Day of AI Australia’s role as an international hub for AI literacy and education, supporting the development of new generative AI-powered learning tools, teacher training initiatives, and expanded outreach to students and schools across the region.

Marie Efstathiou of Google.org Australia said, “Day of AI Australia’s work alongside UNSW shows us how generative AI can be a game-changer for tackling some of our biggest social challenges.  Their programs are about actively working towards a fairer and more innovative future for everyone.

“By equipping Australian students and teachers with essential AI skills and hands-on experiences, they are directly boosting confidence and addressing the need for AI literacy in a rapidly evolving world.  We are proud to support their efforts to prepare the next generation to not only understand AI, but to actively leverage it for positive change.”

Empower Teachers, Empowering Students

Natasha Banks, Program Director for Day of AI Australia, said, “This is about giving young Australians the opportunity to shape the AI-powered world they’re growing up in.  By helping students understand what AI is, how it works, and its limitations, we’re giving them the tools to use it safely and creatively.”

Dr. Jake Renzella, Director of Studies (Computer Science) and Co-Head of Computing and Education research at UNSW’s School of Computer Science and Engineering, said, “We want to empower teachers and students with the tools and knowledge to use AI responsibly and creatively.  This grant allows us to build engaging, hands-on learning experiences that bring generative AI out of the abstract.”

Day of AI Australia joins a small, high-impact cohort of 20 nonprofits from around the world selected for their promising use of AI to address pressing societal challenges across education, health, climate, crisis response, and more.  The accelerator includes six months of technical training and mentorship, culminating in a global Demo Day showcasing nonprofit innovations built with generative AI.
