Announcing A New AI Toolkit for Families
June 6, 2025
Summary
Day of AI and Common Sense Media, two leading non-profits, have launched an AI toolkit for families. The toolkit offers videos and interactive activities that build the AI knowledge of K-12 students, parents, and broader school communities.
Education technology nonprofit Day of AI, in partnership with family education leader Common Sense Media, is excited to announce a jointly-developed series of AI literacy videos and related interactive activities. This one-of-its-kind AI literacy toolkit will help families and educators hold thoughtful, age-appropriate conversations about artificial intelligence, while giving children the skills they need to navigate an increasingly digital world.
Empowering families to explore AI together
These resources comes at a time when AI is becoming commonplace in all walks of life, including the world of education. As AI continues to shape children’s worlds – from the videos they watch to the tools they use in schools – this collaboration between an industry leader in Common Sense Media and Day of AI’s experienced team of teachers, researchers, and technologists will provide families and schools with a timely digital literacy playbook.
Started as an MIT initiative in 2021, Day of AI is now a stand-alone nonprofit dedicated to helping K-12 students and educators thrive in the age of artificial intelligence. Common Sense Media is a leading nonprofit providing research-backed reviews, resources, and guidance to help families navigate media and technology. Founded in 2003, Common Sense Media has been a trusted voice for parents and families for over two decades.
“Our team of leading technologists and teachers at Day of AI is thrilled to announce this partnership with an industry leader in Common Sense Media. This cutting-edge toolkit will empower students and families across the country and world, giving them valuable resources to navigate the AI terrain at this critical moment.” — Jeff Riley, Day of AI Senior Advisor and former Massachusetts Commissioner of Education

The Family AI Literacy Toolkit includes resources like conversation cards to spark discussions about AI
What you’ll gain from the toolkit
The AI Literacy Toolkit has been designed with several goals in mind, including the desire to:
-
Help parents and caregivers understand what AI is and how their children may be using it in school and at home, beginning with viewing a short video
-
Support families in having honest, curiosity-driven conversations about AI
-
Offer activities and ideas that introduce AI concepts through play, creativity, and reflection
-
Equip schools and educators with communication tools and strategies to introduce AI in inclusive, age-appropriate ways
-
Encourage responsible, ethical, and equitable use of AI among young learners
Available materials in the toolkit include a “Toolkit Overview for Families and Caregivers;” Conversation Cards for parents and families; and an Implementation Guide for school communities. A variety of users – from a parent of a curious kindergartner to a school leader planning community outreach for their students – will be able to benefit from having this toolkit, which can be found at dayofai.org/families/
To support the launch of the toolkit, Day of AI and Common Sense Media will co-host a series of free webinars in the coming months. These sessions will introduce the toolkit’s resources, offer guidance on facilitating conversations about AI at home and in school, and provide a space for families and educators to ask questions and share experiences. Join us for the launch webinar on July 28th at 12:00 PM (EST)! The session will be hosted on edWeb.net. Registration details will be available soon!
