The University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) hosted the country’s first Day of AI – Philippines, themed “Celebrating the Power of Artificial Intelligence.”
The event was held in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, MIT RAISE (Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education), Unilab Foundation, Asian Institute of Management (AIM), and CIST.
Key Highlights:
Opening Plenary: Dr. Cynthia Breazeal (MIT Media Lab, MIT RAISE) delivered a keynote on how AI is transforming industries—from art and education to healthcare and agriculture—and emphasized the importance of responsible AI use and preparing students for an AI-driven future.
Panel on AI and Education: Leaders from the Department of Education, TESDA, and DOST-SEI discussed national efforts to integrate AI in education and workforce development.
Hands-On Workshops: Participants explored AI through interactive sessions, including creating AI-powered mobile apps, IoT and microcontroller projects, educational robots, and micro:bit programming.
Closing Plenaries: Dr. Christopher Monterola (AIM) discussed AI’s disruptive potential across industries, while Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go (AIM, Ateneo, NUS) explored the growing role of AI in healthcare innovation.
AI Art Contest: Students showcased AI-generated artworks celebrating creativity and technology, with winners recognized during the event.
