Sounds Like You: AI, Identity and Trust

When AI can imitate someone’s voice, face, writing, or other characteristics, how do we know who is really on the other side?

Age:

Sounds Like You: AI, Identity and Trust

Approximate Total Time: 55–60 minutes

Recommended for Ages 12–18 (typically U.S. Grades 7–12)

About This Activity

Students explore how AI-generated and manipulated media can make it harder to know whether someone is really who they claim to be. Through a realistic voice-message scenario, students consider the kinds of evidence people use to recognize and verify someone's identity and how AI can make familiar signals, such as a person's voice, face, or communication style, less reliable.

Lesson

1. Who Is Really There?
Students investigate how AI can complicate identity and trust by evaluating different forms of identity evidence and considering how those signals could be copied, generated, or manipulated. They design and test a verification process and learn how recognition, authentication, and multiple independent forms of evidence can help establish whether someone really is who they claim to be.
