Age:
Approximate Total Time: 2–3 hours (plus optional extensions)
Summary:
This two-part unit helps students explore how artificial intelligence both contributes to and combats environmental challenges. Students investigate the carbon footprint of AI systems, consider sustainability and energy use, and reflect on their own technology habits. Through data analysis, discussion, and self-assessment, they develop an understanding of how responsible AI development can support environmental stewardship.
Lessons:
- The Climate Impact of AI – Review AI concepts and examine how AI affects the environment through both positive and negative examples. Students watch Breaking Down the Climate Impact of AI and analyze real-world case studies on sustainability, e-waste, and wildlife tracking.
- Our Carbon Footprint – Students explore how personal technology use impacts the planet, conduct a tech usage audit, and calculate their own digital carbon footprint. The lesson ends with an individual or class sustainability pledge to reduce impact.
