In July 2025, Day of AI and MIT RAISE, in collaboration with the Rwanda Ministry of Education and the Rwanda Education Board (REB), launched a first-of-its-kind national initiative to bring AI literacy to every classroom in Rwanda.
Over 150 master teachers from all districts across the country participated in a four-day training led by Dr. Randi Williams, Head of Research at Day of AI. The program marks a major step toward integrating artificial intelligence education into Rwanda’s primary and secondary school ICT curriculum.
Educators explored how to help students understand, question, and create with AI, emphasizing both innovation and ethics. Supported by the Ibrahim El-Hefni Technical Training Foundation, the initiative represents the most significant national rollout of the Day of AI curriculum in Africa.
“Together, we’re planting the seeds of a generation that will understand, build, and lead with AI,” said Dr. Williams.
Rwandan education leaders echoed this vision:
Eden Mamo (MINEDUC) emphasized that the effort aligns with Vision 2050 and Rwanda’s goal of developing a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy.
Dr. Diane Segati (REB) highlighted the country’s commitment to ensuring “AI is used in all schools, by all students, and by all teachers.”
Professor Cynthia Breazeal, Director of MIT RAISE, praised Rwanda’s leadership, calling the launch “a model for how nations can prioritize AI readiness in education with both vision and urgency.”
With master teachers now returning to their districts, this effort is poised to transform AI education nationwide—ensuring that Rwanda’s students are prepared not just to use AI, but to shape its future.
