Grade 2: Data All Around Us

Students explore how people collect and organize data, discover how AI learns from examples, and see how AI supports creative careers like digital animation.

Age:

Data All Around Us

Approximate Total Time: 3 class periods (approximately 40–45 minutes each)

Recommended for Ages 7–8 (typically U.S. Grade 2)

About This Unit

Students investigate how people collect, organize, and use data. They begin by building datasets, sorting examples by similarity, and recognizing that the same information can be organized in more than one valid way. Students then examine who is represented in a dataset and how missing information can lead to decisions that do not work well for everyone.

The unit concludes with a career spotlight on digital animation. Students apply their understanding of examples, patterns, and predictions to explore how AI can help animators create smooth movement while people remain responsible for characters, stories, and creative decisions.

Lessons

1. What Is a Dataset?
Students build and organize datasets, explore different ways the same information can be grouped, and learn that people make decisions about what data to collect, organize, and label.

2. Is It Fair?
Students investigate who is represented in a dataset and explore how missing information can affect decisions made by people or computers.

3. Career Spotlight: Digital Animator
Students explore how AI can help digital animators create smooth movement while people remain responsible for characters, stories, and creative decisions.
